October 11, 2026 | FDA & USDA Safety Watch

Several additional food-safety notices deserve attention beyond the five recalls we already covered.

These announcements were issued October 6–9, not today. The most significant development involves a multistate Salmonella outbreak and additional brands of broccoli sprouting seeds.

🌱 1. BROCCOLI SPROUTING SEEDS — SALMONELLA OUTBREAK

Status: Additional recalls and an updated FDA investigation.

Two more brands have been identified alongside the previously reported HOME GROWN recall.

  • Gardeners Basics: Waltham 29 Broccoli Sprouting Seeds, 1-pound bags, UPC 848137042889, marked “Packed for 2027.” Recall announced October 8.

  • Eden Brothers: Calabrese Broccoli Seeds, packets, 1-ounce and 1-pound sizes, lots 1022067 and 1022068. Recall announced October 7.

  • Distribution: Nationwide, including online marketplaces.

Here’s the serious part: The FDA’s October 9 investigation update reports 32 illnesses, three hospitalizations and no deaths across six states. Testing linked contaminated broccoli seed supplier lot W4105 to the outbreak strain.

Consumer action: Do not plant, sprout or eat affected seeds. Discard them and sanitize containers and surfaces they touched.

🐟 2. STARFISH SEAFOOD TRIO — POSSIBLE LISTERIA

Status: New recall announcement, October 9.

Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. recalled Starfish Seafood Trio containing cold-smoked salmon, halibut and trout.

Affected product: 8-ounce vacuum-sealed packages, lot D139149161-153, expiration December 1, 2027.

Distribution: New York, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Listeria can cause serious illness, particularly in pregnant women, older adults and immunocompromised individuals.

No illnesses were reported in the announcement.

Consumer action: Do not eat affected packages. Return them for a refund.

🥣 3. RIAD’S OLIVA TO GO — UNDECLARED SESAME

Status: New recall announcement, October 9.

Approximately 250 containers of Baba Ghanouj, Spicy Baba Ghanouj and Hummus were recalled because sesame was missing from the ingredient declaration.

Affected dates: Best-by dates October 10–18, depending on the product.

Distribution: Litchfield County, Connecticut, and the Great Barrington, Massachusetts, area.

Sesame is a major food allergen. An incorrect label can create a serious risk for someone with an allergy.

Consumer action: People with sesame allergies should not consume affected products. Return them for a refund or replacement.

🥫 4. GRACE CHICKEN VIENNA SAUSAGES — USDA PUBLIC HEALTH ALERT

Status: USDA alert issued October 6, not a conventional product recall.

The USDA warned consumers about Grace Ready to Eat Chicken Vienna Sausages and the Hot & Spicy variety, imported from Jamaica without the required U.S. inspection authorization.

Affected products: 140-gram cans bearing establishment number EST. NO G-01, regardless of product date.

Distribution: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Maryland and Texas.

No illnesses were confirmed in the original alert.

Consumer action: Do not consume affected cans. Discard or return them.

🔬 THE ORGANIC CHEMIST’S TAKE

The broccoli seed situation deserves particular attention.

This is no longer simply a precaution involving potentially contaminated seeds. A documented outbreak has been linked to the implicated seed lot, and additional sellers have issued recalls.

That’s an important distinction for our educational content.

Different products. Different hazards. Different levels of evidence.

EDUCATION. NOT FEAR. TRANSPARENCY. NOT GUESSWORK.

Monitoring note: The FDA notices and outbreak investigation were verified against official records. The USDA alert details were corroborated through reporting, but the USDA website did not permit direct retrieval during this check.
